Description

The great temple of Marduk in Babylon, one of the most magnificent religious structures of the ancient world. Associated with the ziggurat Etemenanki.

Significance

Esagila was the heart of Babylonian religion and the site of the New Year (Akitu) festival, where the Enuma Elish was ritually recited each spring.
