Myth of Adapa
The sage Adapa is summoned to heaven after breaking the south wind's wing, but Enki's deceptive advice costs him the chance at immortality.
The Sage
Adapa, first of the seven sages, served as priest of Enki in Eridu. He was given supreme wisdom but not eternal life.
The South Wind
While fishing, the south wind capsized his boat. In anger, Adapa cursed the wind and broke its wing. For seven days, no south wind blew across the land.
Summoned to Heaven
Anu, disturbed by the broken wind, summoned Adapa to heaven. Enki warned him: "When they offer you bread, do not eat. When they offer you water, do not drink. They are the bread and water of death."
The Lost Gift
But Anu, impressed by Adapa's wisdom, offered him the bread and water of eternal life. Following Enki's warning, Adapa refused, and lost immortality forever.
